The Prelude

Keshav:

7th of Feb...This has become one of the best days of my life. We finally started the much awaited program.

It started on an abstract level on 15th August 2009. We went to our campus to have a small cultural event on the independence day. And we saw...once again the deprived children. It wasn't a comfortable sight. Two or three days after, I went to Amit Sir to settle bills regarding the event. It was then that he told me that we should not be ignoring those kids-
They are building IISER Mohali campus...The campus must not be built on their cost. Some days went by and not much was done. As I came to know some time later, some of my seniors along with Arvind Sir had thought of starting such a program. But somehow the conditions were not that favourable. This gave me a kind of boost that there are people who are interested and who have already planned (although a bit) for starting such an activity.

I, with Amit Sir, then contacted Abhilasha, Anshu, Ankit, Mehreen and Nilmani to start this activity. All of us contributed some ideas regarding what we should be doing, what our objectives were and how we could achieve them.

As it happens, the starting was the most difficult thing. We decided that we will survey the place first and have a rough idea about the number of labourers, their kids, age range, their hometown, their education and all other information that could e relevant. Amit Sir had already prepared a plan of action by then. The six students went to Mrs. Sathyamurthy to take her suggestion and blessings. She was happy with our initiative. Next was to take permission from director sir. But then there came a series of events...and all of this got delayed. And then the time just passed on without anything being done. Then came Sangeet Sandhya, our first cultural event, and the idea was buried for the semester. We went home for winter vacations.

Came January. We decided to restart the program. Amit sir once again typed a plan pf action. I wrote an application to the DOSA and the director taking permission to visit the campus.
This also got delayed. We finally mailed director sir asking him for an appointment, to which he replied that we should go ahead with our activity. It was 3rd February 2010. Things were finally to start.
